Calcium is necessary for proper growth and maintenance of healthy bones, teeth and hooves, and is important in maintaining the overall health of the body. Many traditional feeds, including oats, barley or bran, do not have sufficient calcium levels. This can cause skeletal abnormalities in foals and problems in mature horses. Calcium is essential for the growth and integrity of bones and tissues.
Calcium salts make up about 70% of bone mass and this is what gives bones their rigidity. Calcium is also responsible for many other important functions throughout the body. Helps with muscle contractions, especially of the heart, and plays a role in the transmission of nerve impulses in the central nervous system. Perhaps the most well-known role of calcium is its participation in the lactation process, and lactating mares must have an adequate supply of it.
NAF Limestone Flour is a natural and efficient calcium supplement, but ordinary feeds usually also lack many micronutrients and nutrients, so mostly a general vitamin-mineral feed supplement will work better. Horses that are fed a fully balanced diet in adequate amounts do not need additional supplementation.
Limestone is especially recommended when feeding wheat bran for a long time.
