Copper is essential for forming and maintaining all connective tissues and for skeletal mineralisation.
Chelated Copper from TRM is copper chelated with amino acids. What is the difference between chelated copper and inorganic copper? Inorganic copper is extracted from the earth by mining. Examples of inorganic copper products include copper sulphates and copper carbonates. They may be cheap, but they are not highly absorbable!
TRM chelated copper is organic copper. It is the only effective way to supplement copper orally in horses. Chelated copper is a metal-containing organic compound in which the metal ion (Cu ++) is surrounded by and bound to organic matter. This organic matter consists of amino acids. Copper must be in a neutral, stable form to be absorbed.
Most areas of Poland have a severe copper deficiency in the soil.
Factors inhibiting copper uptake:
Dosage: Add to feed.
Adult horses: give 25 ml daily.
Foals and yearlings: give 15 ml daily.
Ingredients (per 25ml): E4 Copper (as copper chelate of glycine, hydrate) - 200 mg

Most areas of Poland have a severe copper deficiency in the soil.
Factors inhibiting copper uptake:
- Soil pH - too acidic or too alkaline
- Excess zinc
- Excess phosphate (a fertiliser contaminant)
- Excess vitamin C
- Soil leaching
- Incorrect soil moisture content
- Blood - anaemia is recognised in animals. Copper is essential as an enzyme component in RBC formation.
- Blood vessels - Copper deficiencies can lead to ruptures in the aorta or main uterine artery, particularly in older mares.
- Bones - skeletal abnormalities occur in almost all copper-deficient animals (especially young ones). Deficiency of the copper enzyme lysyl oxidase causes poor collagen and bone formation. This is now considered a predisposing factor for Developmental Orthopaedic Disease (DOD).
- DOD conditions include:
- Angular limb deformities
- Wobbler syndrome
- Defective cartilage formation
- Osteochondrosis
- Nerve cells - demyelination characterises copper deficiency.
- Hair and coat - dullness and coarseness of hair and coat.
- Enzyme changes - Copper is essential for life because it is needed for at least 12 known metalloenzymes.
