There is evidence that stress has a significant influence on the occurrence of feline idiopathic cystitis (FIC).

Typical patients affected by this condition are cats kept exclusively indoors and cats sharing their space with other cats. In many cats, an episode may be triggered by a stressful event, even when a direct link is difficult to establish. These patients often show no other behavioural signs suggesting stress. 

Cats with FIC do not cope with stress in the “normal” way. In response to a stressor, an impulse from the brain reaches the nerves in the bladder wall. Stimulation of these nerves releases neurotransmitters that may intensify local inflammatory reactions in the bladder wall and cause pain. In healthy cats, stress causes a simultaneous rise in cortisol, the stress hormone, and catecholamines, the neurotransmitters adrenaline and noradrenaline.

Crucially, cats with FIC do not show such a marked rise in cortisol, so they do not respond in the usual way. They may therefore not display the typical stress-related behaviours seen in healthy cats in such situations.

In addition to these mechanisms, research has shown that the protective glycosaminoglycan (GAG) layer lining the bladder in these cats is insufficient and often defective. This predisposes the lining to damage from irritants naturally present in urine.

Directions for use:
Mix FURINAID PLUS thoroughly with food.
Feed each cat individually.
Directions for the first 14 days: 6 ml daily.
