Cystitis in cats - what it means and how to choose treatment

What is feline idiopathic cystitis?

Feline idiopathic cystitis (FIC) is a condition most often caused by stress or psychological factors without bacterial infection. Cats, particularly those living entirely indoors, are most exposed to stress from being unable to fulfil their natural instincts. Loneliness and changes in their surroundings often lead to bladder problems.

What causes cystitis in cats?

The most common causes of cystitis:

  • stress - cats may become stressed by environmental changes, moving house, a new household member or another pet,
  • lack of exercise and a poor diet - insufficient exercise and low-quality food encourage urinary crystals that cause cystitis,
  • dehydration - cats often drink too little water, concentrating their urine and causing bladder problems,
  • bacterial infections - although very rare, these can also cause inflammation, especially in older cats.

How can you recognise cystitis symptoms?

To recognise that something is wrong, watch your cat for behaviour such as:

  • frequent urination - your cat repeatedly approaches the litter tray, with attempts to urinate often unsuccessful or painful,
  • blood in the urine - blood is a worrying sign that always requires veterinary consultation,
  • behavioural changes - your cat becomes more irritable and avoids contact or, conversely, may seek help,
  • meowing when urinating - meowing during litter tray visits may indicate pain.

Diagnosing and treating cystitis in cats

Diagnosing cystitis in cats usually requires tests to rule out other diseases. These mainly include urine tests, bladder ultrasound and blood tests. For idiopathic cystitis, treatment focuses on relieving symptoms and preventing recurrence.

What does cystitis treatment involve?

  1. Feeding wet food helps increase fluid intake in your cat's diet, reducing the risk of recurrence.
  2. Giving products that support urinary health - we recommend the supplement TRM Furinaid Plus, which strengthens the bladder lining and reduces the risk of inflammation.
  3. Depending on symptom severity, your vet may recommend painkillers and anti-inflammatory medication.
  4. Creating a calm environment and providing activity and play help reduce stress.

Can you treat your cat's cystitis at home?

If your cat shows typical signs of cystitis, a veterinary visit is necessary. If the problem is mild or recurrent, consulting your vet will help establish a home care plan. TRM Furinaid Plus can be used regularly to support urinary health,

Preventing cystitis in cats - how can you prevent urinary problems?

Encourage your cat to drink  - place several water bowls around your home.

A suitable diet - wet food or a specialist urinary diet reduces the risk of urinary stones and crystals.

Stress reduction - cats are very sensitive to stress, which can contribute to cystitis. Create a calm environment and provide hiding places that help your cat feel secure.

Supplementation - products such as TRM Furinaid Plusstrengthen the bladder lining and help reduce the risk of recurring urinary problems.

Litter tray hygiene - keep the tray clean so your cat is happy to use it. Having more litter trays than cats is also recommended.

Have your cat checked regularly by your vet and maintain preventive care - this reduces the risk of recurring cystitis and helps your cat stay healthier and calmer.
